Beta testing for the upcoming free-to-play MMO Transformers Universe is said to happen very soon, according to the game’s producer Kris Jones.
“It’s very soon,” Jones said to Eurogamer. “It’s not going to be far away.
“We’re launching this in 2012, so it goes without saying that the beta will be soon.”
The game is said to build on a modified version of Jagex’s RuneScape engine, and will take from Transformer: Prime – The Animated Series both in terms of style and themes.
“We’ve taken some assets; we’ve been in touch with the studios and we’ve taken from that, but we are our own game – that’s the bit that needs to be made clear. We’re not making a game based on any existing continuity.
“We don’t want to pigeon-hole ourselves to just the toys, or just [Generation 1 1984-1993], or just Prime, or just the movies. We’ve been very clear that we want to take from all over the universe. That’s why it’s called Universe.”
Robot characters are said to be heavily customisable, however your class in the game will be intrinsically linked to what vehicle you transform into.
Like the popular MMO RuneScape, Transformers Universe will be a free browser-based MMO.
