Capcom pumped out six Onimusha games between the series’ debut in 2001 and 2006 – the most recent entry being Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, produced by Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono.
Since the introduction of the high definition platforms, however, Capcom hasn’t shown a desire to return to the multi-million selling franchise.
According to Ono, the time for the franchise to return could be now.
“The time feels right to me,” Ono told IGN. “It feels like it’s the time to resurrect that series. But I wouldn’t want to do the things we’ve done before. I think it might be time to progress beyond the standard single-player adventure. There should be ways to expand upon what we’ve done while involving the community more. Perhaps implement some sort of multiplayer into a game like that.
“I don’t have those ideas solidified yet, but when these ideas come to fruition, when I feel good about them and I feel we can do something, I will most certainly take them in for approval with the higher-ups. It’s something I’m very interested in doing.”
As of December 31, 2010, the Onimusha franchise had achieved sales of 7.9 million copies worldwide. Later releases in the series failed to match the sales success of early entries, but there appears to be enough fan interest to warrant a reboot of sorts.
