Star Wars: The Old Republic will be the last large-scale MMO to have a subscription, according to Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley.

In an interview with China-based 17173.com (translated by MMOsite), Smedley explained this will be the last time we’ll see a AAA MMO embrace a full-on subscription model.

He went on to reveal that SOE’s upcoming MMO Planetside 2 will include some form of free-to-play element, however it may not be microtransaction-oriented. Instead Smedley hints at the possibility of a League of Legends-style auction house.

Additionally Smedley has stated SOE is aiming to begin wider testing of Planetside 2 later this year in North America.

Smedley has stated his love for free-to-play in the past, saying “free to play is here to stay” while referencing the likes of Minecraft as one of the most influential games in the industry.
