Despite the hype surrounding the PlayStation 3, Sony will soon be giving the PlayStation 2 an additional push with a $20 price cut and a full scale ad campaign. Sony has cut the US retail price of the PlayStation 2 by $20, meaning the console will now retail at only $129.99. Sony Computer Entertainment America is also planning a large scale ad campaign. April 27 will see print ads appearing in newspapers including The Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, L.A. Times, New York Times and Philadelphia Inquirer. Ads will also appear online including on AOL.
“While we continue to innovate and design groundbreaking new products, we remain dedicated to our long-term vision for the PlayStation 2 platform,” said SCEA president and CEO Kaz Hirai. “Now even more consumers, as well as casual gamers, can experience what the PlayStation 2 platform has to offer.“
There is currently no sign of a similar price cut in Europe, but we’ll keep you updated.
