Last week news emerged on CNN, by way of analyst P.J. McNealy, who said: “There is a price cut coming in the second half of the year.” McNealy explained that the PSP “has lost momentum. Nintendo has had a great run since it launched the DS Lite and Sony needs to regain some ground.” For these reasons McNealy believes Sony will cut the price of the PSP by $50 to $149, putting it within touching distance of the Nintendo DS at $129.

However, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz today, a Sony UK spokesperson has denied plans to cut the price of the PSP, stating: “Currently we have no plans to cut the price of the PSP at this time.

Denying future price cuts doesn’t mean they won’t happen. It makes sense to announce the price cut and make the cut as simultaneously as possible, in order to minimise any lull in sales as people wait for the cheaper price. There’s no reason for Sony to publicly announce that the PSP will be cheaper come Christmas, when we’re only in August.
