Since the dawn of mankind, one question has been uttered throughout the ages. It is the question of myth and legend, magic and sorcery, to utter it would be insanity itself as such a parcel of imagination would surely only be the talk dreamers and madmen. That question is “What would result if Tetris and Halloween collided into one?”

Spooky Spirits Puzzle Drop of course! Innogiant dared to dream the unthinkable and as such we now live in a better world. So settle yourself down, have a handkerchief to catch the tears of joy at the ready, this game is what the edge of your seat was made for.

Developed for the iPhone and iPod Touch, Spooky Spirits Puzzle Drop is quite surprisingly an entertaining puzzle game which for short casual sessions, catches your attention and runs away with it. The game takes the standard Tetris formula and adds to it spirits, spooky settings and charm.

Tim and Becky are spirit guardians but unfortunately Becky is a mite forgetful and she happened to turn her back on her duties allowing the spirits to escape. We now follow the pair through colourful and vibrant areas including the Sphinx, a haunted house and a crypt as they try to reclaim their spooks.

Spooky Spirits offers us three games modes, the first is named “Panic Mode” the second “Puzzle Mode and third “Eternity Mode”. The former plays like a game of crazy Tetris. The player is given a target score to reach and must drop blocks and catch the appropriate amount of spirits before the screen overfills.

Puzzle mode requires a little more attention and logical thinking, you are given a strict number of block drops and a set amount of spirits which must be caught. I find this mode the most relaxing and entertaining, it is perfectly suited for those who like to enjoy a quick puzzle and can be devilishly tricky. Finally Eternity Mode is Panic Mode with a high score system. Each is simple but also factors high in entertainment.

The control system is a series of directional swipes, left and right will select a pair of blocks, up will rearrange them and down will release them. For the most part the control scheme is intuitive but I found it at times a little inaccurate and over sensitive, a strategy of colour coordinated blocks can come to a staggering halt with a twitchy finger.

Spooky Spirits generally is entertaining and offers some amusing short form gameplay. The trio of game modes allows for variation and it is a game that while wont keep your attention for prolonged amounts of time, will keep you coming back for quick bursts.

My major criticism of the game is it’s lack of originality. The game borrows heavily from Tetris and a few more added features such as chaining and power up blocks would have been a welcome addition. As it stands, Spooky Spirits is an enjoyable game that is worth a look in, just do not expect unbridled genius.
