Sony is looking into ways to bring back cult PlayStation hit Parappa The Rapper, SCEA president Shawn Layden has revealed, although issues with the game’s licensing may prove too tricky to overcome.

Discussing the tale of how the firm brought back music-based platformer Vib-Ribbon with Wired, Layden explained: “Of course, now everyone wants me to bring out Parappa the Rapper. Which we are looking at. But that’s a more complex rights package.”

Whether Parappa works out or not, though, Layden says he may consider bringing other popular franchises back, too.

“It’s us trying to be more open at SCEA,” he continues. “If someone comes to me about something that they would like to have back on the platform, and it’s in my power to make it happen… I mean, why wouldn’t we?”

Parappa The Rapper first appeared on the original PlayStation back in 1996, with its rhythm-based gameplay proving popular with fans. The game spawned two sequels, UmJammer Lammy and Parappa The Rapper 2, and led to Parappa being featured in PS3 brawler PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Sony has yet to announce where he may end up next.
