Sony have officially scotched rumours that the PS3 will be publicly unveiled in Tokyo at the end of this month by once again repeating their mantra of “the first showing of the next generation PlayStation will be at E3 this year”.
Sources at the GDC had mentioned a private unveiling to the upper-echelons of Sony management and word had got out that this was to lead to a public demonstration much earlier than E3 in May but it appears that this meeting is strictly for the Sony top brass and no one else.
Whilst the content of the Tokyo meeting is obviously going to be kept secret it’s likely that what is shown there will form part of the blueprint for the E3 unveiling. Sony will want to come to E3 without a final hardware design and some decent software to show off their machine’s capabilities so the Sony execs might expect something similar at the end of this month. With several of Sony’s closest developer partnerships in Japan rumoured to have had some form of PS3 dev kits for a few months now, they could be in for a treat.
