PlayStation Now, a streaming game service that utilises cloud-based technology, will launch in the US this summer, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced.

The service promises to offer a “variety of popular PS3 games” first on PS4 and PS3, followed by the PS Vita. There’s also potential for the service to stream classic PSOne, PS2, and PS3 titles. Additionally, most 2014 US models of Sony’s Bravia TV line-up will support PS Now.

Playstation plus

The ultimate goal is to expand the service beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices to enable game streaming to other internet-connected devices.

Much like Netflix, a user of PS Now will be able to begin playing a game on PS4, then pick up their progress on PS3, PS Vita or Bravia TV.

Whilst pricing details haven’t been confirmed, Sony has said there will be the option to rent specific games or choose a subscription that delivers “additional value with the ability to explore and play many games available across a wide variety of genres”.

Features such as online multiplayer, Trophies and messages will also be supported.

“We are thrilled to deliver entertainment experiences only possible from PlayStation through our new streaming game service,” said Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “PS Now will allow users to engage in the world of PlayStation, whether they’re existing fans or have never owned a PlayStation platform.”

At CES this week attendees are able to try PS Now running on PS Vita or Bravia TV. Games at the show include Beyond: Two Souls, God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us and Puppeteer.

A closed beta for PS Now will launch for PS3 in certain regions of the US at the end of the month.

Sadly there’s no word on when PS Now will roll out in Europe, with SCEE blogger Fred Dutton posting the following:

“Unfortunately we’re not quite ready to confirm launch plans for PAL territories. When it comes to broadband provision, Europe is a considerably more complex region, with a huge number of different providers and varying connection speeds from country to country. In short, we need a little more time to ensure a smooth and successful roll-out.

“Rest assured we are working hard to bring PlayStation Now to our region as quickly as possible, and will update you again when we have additional news to share.”
