The PlayStation 3 was expected to launch with a single speed Blu-Ray drive, but it has now emerged that a faster 2 speed drive will be available this autumn, with the possibility of an even faster 4 speed drive available in time for the PlayStation 3.
The specification of the Blu-Ray drive in the PlayStation 3 has yet to be confirmed by Sony, so the speed of the drive is open to change thanks to this breakthrough in speed. There has been a small setback for Blu-Ray in the HD disc battle, with leading manufacturers of optical discs in Taiwan ever so slightly favouring HD-DVD because they will incur much lower costs if the HD DVD platform is adopted.
While a fast Blu-Ray drive would make streaming data faster, Sony may well be looking to reduce costs in this area and use an older, slower drive. If Blu-Ray movies take off in the same way as DVDs, the inclusion of a drive will be a big enough selling point in itself, no matter what its speed is.
