If you’ve always thought you could use a better Xbox LIVE Gamertag then now’s the time to think about changing as Microsoft is freeing up previously claimed Gamertags which are now classified as dead.

“We have begun the process of making previously used and unavailable (dead) Xbox LIVE Gamertags available,” explained Xbox LIVE’s Major Nelson. “This process will take some time to complete, and no we can’t tell you when the Gamertag you want might be available. If you are interested, you should check back regularly as we are reviving Gamertags daily.”

In order to check if the Gamertag you desire has been freed up, you need to sign into Xbox LIVE and go to the My Xbox channel, then select Change Gamertag. From here you can either choose from the random name generator, or you can enter a specific Gamertag to see if it’s available.

If you decide to make a change it’ll cost 800 MS Points. Changing your Gamertag does not affect your Gamerscore, Achievements, or your friends list.

800 MS Points might put off some Xbox LIVE gamers, but this could be the only chance you get to claim a Gamertag previously believed to be gone forever.

Sadly for Lee and Herrings fans, Curious Orange remains active.
