Following the huge (and slightly unexpected) demand for their new handheld, the Nintendo DS, the Japanese gaming giant has raised its expected yearly profits to an almost unfathomable 90 billion Yen (around £465m).
Nintendo had previously expected to ship around four million DS units before the end of its financial year in March but has upped that by a further million as healthy early sales in Japan and America and pre-order demand in Europe continue to increase. The increased projections are widely attributed to the strong first-party title support that Nintendo has given its new console, including games from nearly all of its major franchises.
This new-found financial health is a marked increase over the 33 billion Yen profit the company made in 2004 – a year which saw Nintendo make its first ever 6-monthly loss.
