Whilst Nintendo hoped that its’ latest handheld would be popular, it didn’t realise just how popular it would be, selling like proverbial hot-cakes in the first week since launch. In fact, given the wide-spread talk of shortages in the US and Japan, the console has still managed to notch up around 1.2 million sales. Not bad, I think you’ll agree.

To help further cement their dominance in the handheld market (until we see what Sony’s PSP can do when it hits retail), the Big N have announced that they are upping shipments of the device, with the aim being to sell around 1.4 million in North America alone by December 31st.

Why should you care about this – the European release isn’t until next year, right? Well, yes, that’s true. But, in continuing the tradition of it’s handheld’s, the Nintendo DS – like the GameBoy and GameBoy Advance before it – is region-free, as are the games. So you can happily import a console from either Japan or North America without hassle, should you not be able to wait until sometime next year (current speculation puts it down as a February/March release fro the UK). As with any import purchase, though, do your research before committing.

In preparation of the European release, expect to see Pro-G’s coverage of the DS, along with the PSP and current handhelds in early 2005.
