Traverse gaming forums and you will also find various ‘Nintendo are teh do0med’ threads, lamenting the great days of Sega, the perceived success of the Xbox against the Gamecube, and speculating on when Nintendo will cease to compete in the hardware market. Well, despite the vehement espousing of the doom-mongerers, people do still flock to buy Nintendo gear, as evidenced by yet another year of (as expected) healthy profit.

Preliminary figures suggest a profit around 17% higher than expectations, with net profits suggested to be weighing in at around 587 million Euro, up from earlier estimates of around 501 Euro. It should be noted, though, that whilst sales of the new DS hardware have been fantastic around the globe, much of the increase in profits are due to currency movements, with the weakening of the Yen increasing the worth of overseas assets. Yes, I’m sure Nintendo don’t care where it comes from, either.

In other news, it was also announced that the Big N will be opening a ‘Nintendo store’ in Manhattan’s Rockerfeller Centre. The two-storey shop will be used to promote the brand and allow early access to new games and paraphernalia, and will also include a Pokemon section. That alone should ensure healthy numbers pass through the doors.
