Gamers thinking of holding off on buying a Nintendo 3DS until a more compact ‘Lite’ model is released might want to rethink their plan; Nintendo says it has no short-term intentions of creating a slighter version of the handheld.

“The first thing (Nobuo) Nagai-san, who’s in charge at the Uji plant, said to me when he looked over the designs for Nintendo 3DS before mass production began was ‘This time it’s fully packed right from the start’,” said Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata in the latest Iwata Asks feature.

“He was right,” added 3DS hardware designer Kenichi Sugino. “That’s why we don’t have any short-term plans for creating a more compact version of Nintendo 3DS like we did with Nintendo DS Lite.”

Iwata concluded: “When making Nintendo 3DS, we used all our tricks for Nintendo DS Lite – and more – for cutting down on size right from the start.”

The Nintendo 3DS launches in Europe on March 25.

Nintendo probably has used tricks discovered when shrinking down its DS handheld, but that doesn’t mean advances in technology won’t allow for the creation of smaller, more efficient components which result in a slimmer, lighter and longer lasting version of the 3DS.

An updated version of the handheld is inevitable, but only Nintendo knows how long we’ll be made to wait.
