Speaking to GameInformer at Games Convention Leipzig 2007, Castlevania series creator Koji Igarashi has revealed that the next home console version in the long-running Castlevania franchise will be for Xbox 360 – possibly a platform exclusive.
“I will be working on a DS version, but I am thinking of moving to the home consoles for the future. I will continue to use 2D for the DS version, but I’m still trying to figure out which console to do the home console versions,” said Igarashi. “I think the Xbox 360 would be the best platform for the US market.
Asked why he chose the Xbox 360, Igarashi explained that it is all about the success of the Xbox 360 in the US.
“The US market is the biggest market for the Castlevania series, so I will give the first priority to the US market. The platform will be the Xbox 360, since the PS3 isn’t doing well everywhere in the world,” said Igarashi.
That’s not to say the game won’t also appear on PlayStation 3. Igarashi points towards the success of Metal Gear Solid 4 as a key system seller, but also notes that “development would be very tough“.
And what of the Wii? After all, it is the best selling console in the US.
“Yes, Wii is outselling [other consoles], but the Wii software market is dominated by Nintendo so third party titles are not so good [as far as sales],” said Igarashi. “The fact that Wii is outselling right now can’t be the reason for me to create a Wii version, but I’m always doing research and development about the Wii version, so I have some ideas about a Wii version already.“
