Treyarch has announced details of its new Operation Apocalypse season event for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 which kicks off later today, and sees the undead take over all three modes – Zombies, Multiplayer and Blackout – of the shooter.

In Multiplayer, there's a new Specialist by the name of Reaper. He's a war robot previously seen in Black Ops 3 with a penchant for heavy weapons – his Scythe is a high damage machine gun firing explosive rounds, and his Radar Shroud ability hides teammates from the radar. If you're a Black Ops Pass holder, you can also expect three new multiplayer maps in the form of Der Schatten, Remnant and the return of Havana.

Meanwhile, the gamemode Sticks and Stones gets added to the playlist, which lets players play with just a crossbow, ballistic knife and combat axes. The Black Market meanwhile will see the Reaver C86 crossbow, the Argus shotgun and the Backhander – a disembodied zombie arm – added as weapons for purchase.

Over in Blackout, a new 'Haunting Fog' has been added to the main map to give things a spooky atmosphere, and a new variant to the Alcatraz map that shifts the action to a night time setting, as well as introducing an Alcatraz Portals Horde mode. Later on in the season, we can expect another new mode, Pandemic, to be added too. On top of all of this will be three new characters you can play as in the Blackout mode available in the Black Market, including ol' Machete himself Danny Trejo.

Finally, Zombies – as you probably would expect – sees the meatiest chunk of new content in the form of the Alpha Omega chapter of the ongoing 'experience' – it'll see new elixirs (some returning from Black Ops 3), new perks and, later in the season, a new Gauntlet. It's boasting a map said to be '400%' larger than the fan favourite Nuketown Zombies one, and plenty of new enemies to tackle.

There's a trailer to go with all of this below, and a more exhausted list of everything coming in this season's update can be found on the Treyarch blog. Operation Apocalypse Z kicks off today in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 on PlayStation 4, and will come to PC and Xbox One after the exclusivity period approximately a month or so later.

If you're already looking to the next game on the horizon, that'd be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – you can find our preview of that over here.
