In case you missed it, Destiny 2: Forsaken will kick things off by bumping off Cayde-6, who is arguably the series' best character to date. That's not really saying much, as Destiny's cast aren't exactly the most nuanced of folk, but Nathan Fillion's wise-cracking Hunter Vanguard was pretty popular.

Unfortunately, developer Bungie has confirmed that Cayde-6 is definitely dead for good, and won't see a miraculous resurrection. After all, his demise is the catalyst for Forsaken's revenge-driven plot.

'He's dead. His ghost is dead,' Bungie's Scott Taylor told GamesRadar

'We wanted to establish the tone of the game and show that we're serious about it,' explained Taylor. 'We also want people to process it. You'll play a mission with him, and you're not really sure when this is going to happen, or how, so the emotional experience of that would be very different if you just turned on the game, you saw it and it was all just a shock. It's actually a little more rich and interesting if you have time to sit with it and reflect.'

Taylor went on to say that the developer will make some changes in the Tower to accommodate Cayde-6's death, so expect someone to take his place for giving out quests, for example.

If ever you needed proof of Cayde-6's popularity, look no further than this shrine made out to the mechanical funny man at E3 last week. It even has a packet of ramen thrown into the mix, which Cayde-6 was pretty fond of.

Destiny 2: Forsaken is due out on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on September 4.
