Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK during November 2014, ending the winning streak of PlayStation 4, Microsoft has announced.

The news came as the month’s sales data was published by the NPD Group.

“We are amazed by the excitement Xbox fans have shown to start off this holiday,” wrote Mike Nichols, corporate vice president, Xbox Marketing. “November set a new record for sales of Xbox One, and Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK.

“Response to the holiday lineup of games on Xbox One was incredible, with Xbox One fans buying more games in November in the US than any other gen eight platform and enjoying over 357 million hours of gameplay globally.”

Nichols added: “In fact, more fans logged into Xbox Live across Xbox One and Xbox 360, and enjoyed more entertainment, than any other month in the history of Xbox.”

Given how aggressive Microsoft has been with its Xbox One pricing over the Black Friday shopping period it’s not surprising to see the platform’s sales on the up.

Sony, too, is pretty pleased with sales during November.

“We are thrilled with the incredible momentum seen at retail heading into the holiday shopping season,” said the platform holder in a statement. “PS4 is the cumulative leader in hardware sales and was No. 1 on the Amazon Video Games Bestseller list on Black Friday.

“On the network side, November was the biggest month ever in PlayStation Store history with a nearly 50 percent increase in unique visitors compared to last year. We couldn’t have done any of this without the support of our fans. The immediate success of PlayStation Experience and celebration of the 20th Anniversary demonstrates tremendous dedication to the PlayStation platform. We are humbled by the loyalty of our fans and look forward to amazing them in 2015.”

So popular have the PS4 and Xbox One proved to be that they are outpacing the first 13 month sales of PS3/Xbox One by a huge 80 per-cent, NPD has said

And the positivity doesn’t end there, with Nintendo stating that sales of Wii U hardware and software were up by more than 10 per cent and 90 per cent respectively over the same period in 2013. Nintendo added that the week of Black Friday was the “biggest single week of Wii U hardware sales since the system launched in November 2012”.

Much of this success was driven by price reductions and the launch of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on December 21, which has sold nearly 710,000 units across retail and digital.

3DS software sales in November increased by more than 40 per cent year-on-year.
