Xbox One began development in 2010 and was always targeting a $499 price no matter what Sony came in at with PS4, Xbox’s senior director of marketing and planning Albert Penello has told Forbes.
“We didn’t know what [Sony] were going to do, but our price of $499 was a target we were going for from the start,” said Penello. “It was always going to be $499 no matter what Sony did.”
Penello says that development of the Xbox One officially began “at the end of 2010”.
He added: “We’d talked about it since we launched the NXE (New Xbox Experience). We kept an eye on GPU and CPU performance to see what was happening. We started talking about it a little bit as far as NXE, but it really came together in 2010.”
Rumours that the Xbox One would be called Xbox Infinity weren’t that far off the mark, Penello added.
“That’s actually from the brand guys. The name is all them. We just wanted to make sure the hardware was solid. What it was called was top secret, even for many people on the team.
He continued: “The name Xbox Infinity was in the running, I can say that. They’re crafty. Who’s to say that they didn’t leak that name out in the weeks ahead of the launch? They are very crafty.”
Xbox One will launch in November.
