Update: Albert Penello has posted a Twitter update stating his earlier information was wrong. It turns out Xbox Music on Xbox One will require a subscription.

“I was wrong about Music on XboxOne: You get 15 free song plays then need Music Pass for ad-free streaming. No ad-supported streaming. Sorry!” he Tweeted.

Original story: Xbox One users will be able to access a free, ad-supported Xbox Music service, Albert Penello, Microsoft’s head of product planning for Xbox One, has confirmed.

Xbox Music for Windows 8.1 and web offers streaming music for free thanks to an ad-supported model, whereas Xbox Music on Xbox 360 is a subscription only service.

Xbox One users will be able to choose between the free, add-supported service or an uninterrupted subscription model. It’s not clear if the ad-supported model will also be made available on Xbox 360.

An Xbox Live Gold membership is, however, required.
