Xbox One games will not be region-free, Microsoft appears to have confirmed.

“Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale,” a Microsoft representative told Digital Trends.

“We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One.”

The firm’s decision to region-lock Xbox One shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise: Xbox 360 games were largely region-locked, too, with decisions over territory playback dictated by publishers.

It’s not yet known whether Sony will follow suit with PS4. Unlike Xbox 360, neither PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita include region-locking on disc/cart-based games.
