Entertainment and social network services such as Sky Player and Facebook have allowed Xbox LIVE to enjoy a surge of popularity, according to LIVE’s head of marketing Robin Burrowes.
Speaking at the London Games Conference (via Develop), Burrowes said Xbox LIVE’s userbase is growing at an extraordinary rate as the service reaches its tenth anniversary: from 50,000 users in 2002 to 35 million at the end of 2010. The service now sees a new user sign up every two seconds, said Burrowes.
It is unclear whether these members are paying for Xbox LIVE Gold memberships, or whether they are using Xbox LIVE Free accounts.
Burrowes reported that 75 per cent of European console owners watch DVD’s and Blu-ray’s on their consoles, and 72 per cent download additional content. He also added that 42 per cent use social networks, chat, and e-mail while watching TV programmes and videos.
“We know already that users are resonating with the fact that the games console goes beyond its usual remit,” concluded Burrowes.
