The video game industry is no stranger to the blame game, but now it’s getting it in the neck from a long-term ally: Hollywood.
According to one movie mogul, lad-focused films are being dumped in favour of chick flicks because men are spending too much of their free time playing video games.
“A lot of young males are spending much more time on the internet, games and UFC [ultimate fighting],” Peter Guber, chairman of Mandalay Pictures production company and former studio chief at Sony Pictures, told The Sunday Telegraph.
“They have not abandoned movies but they have diminished as a target, while the female audience has remained robust.”
This “Xbox Factor” is the reason why we’ve seen a glut of terrible romcoms dominate the movie charts over the last few months.
We’ve got a solution: Since all men seem to do is stay at home playing video games, make more films based on the games we’re playing. Pull your finger out, Hollywood, and make a Halo, Gears of War, and Uncharted 2 movie. That’ll get our lazy bums into cinemas.
