Obsidian Entertainment’s exciting The Outer Worlds 2 will no longer cost $80 on launch. The upcoming RPG sequel marked the first Xbox title to charge a full $80 on release, alongside a Game Pass launch, which led to a massive outcry from fans.

Following the extreme criticism, which was only exacerbated by the heinous Microsoft layoffs just weeks later, Obsidian Entertainment’s new RPG will now release at a cheaper $70 price tag, shaving 12.5% off the launch day retail price.

The Outer Worlds 2 will no longer launch at $80

Following the controversy, The Outer Worlds 2 director Brandon Adler told fans that Obsidian does not set the price for their games. Instead, that entire process is up to the executives at Microsoft, who clearly rubbed fans the wrong way.

In a statement to fans, Obsidian Entertainment told fans on social media the good news, saying: “We have received your SOS via skip drone about the pricing. As an organization devoted to making sure that corporations do not go unfettered, we at the Earth Directorate have worked with [REDACTED] to revise the price of The Outer Worlds 2.”

Previously, Xbox explained that the $80 price tag for Obsidian’s RPG was “made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development”. However, it seems that Microsoft’s push into the price range was just too much for gamers.

Xbox’s move to release The Outer Worlds 2 at a $70 price instead follows in the footsteps of Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 4. Earlier this year, CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed that the game would launch at $80, but changed the RPG’s price to $70 after a huge wave of fan complaints online.

The Outer Worlds 2 releases on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC on October 29, 2025 with the game also available on Xbox Game Pass on release day. Hopefully, this is a reminder to other AAA studios that gamers don’t want to pay $80 to play a game on release. (Looking at you, GTA 6.)
