The Xbox 360 was the best-selling video games consoles in the US for the month of August, shifting 96,000 units, Microsoft has announced.
The figure is actually a hefty 50.3 per cent decline over August 2012, and a clear sign that consumers are now looking ahead to the launch of the next generation machines in November.
Nintendo’s 3DS was, however, the best-selling of all the gaming machines, but Nintendo hasn’t said how many units were actually sold. As usual Sony hasn’t offered any sales figures for the PS3 or PS Vita.
It will be interesting to see if current generation console sales pick up as you would expect during the holiday buying months, given the looming November 15 and 22 launches of PS4 and Xbox One, respectively.
The software chart saw Madden NFL 25 come out on top, and whilst exact figures aren’t available, EA announced earlier this month that over a million copies were sold during its first week in stores (August 27-September 2).
Saints Row 4 claimed second place, followed by Disney Infinity at No.3, which according to data given to NYTimes sold around 294,000 copies of its Starter Pack.
Nintendo’s Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for 3DS debuted at No.6 based on retail sales only, but Nintendo says that combined retail and digital units have reached nearly 190,000 since its release on August 11.
Pikmin 3 also sneaks into the chart at No.10 based only on retail sales, but combined with digital copies has sold 115,000 units since its release on August 4.
