Microsoft has finally released the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player update it has been promising for some time now. Most important to movie fans is the additional audio options for those using TOSLINK or HDMI to output audio.

Users will now be able to output sound in a variety of formats including Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 and WMA Pro. There are also a host of performance improvements for networking, specific title compatibility and HD DVD codecs. 1080p is now also supported over HDMI for Xbox Elite users.

Reports suggest that lip sync issues, including those on the new Matrix HD DVD, are now fixed and audio is no longer locked in ‘Night Mode’, which made for a very flat sounding audio mix.

Those with an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player will be asked to install the update when they next play a movie (provided you’re connected to Xbox Live). If you don’t have access to Xbox Live then the update will be released via Xbox.com later this week.
