The external HD DVD drive add-on for the Xbox 360 has been one of the most talked about gaming products of the year. In an attempt to compete with the Blu-Ray movie playback capabilities of the PlayStation 3, Microsoft is offering a relatively cheap route into the HD movie market through an external HD DVD drive that links up with the Xbox 360.

Much of the negativity towards the HD DVD drive has been largely unjust – assuming Microsoft sticks to its promise of not using the new media for gaming – and in reality offers a very affordable solution to those wanting to make the leap to high definition movies.

The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is the best high-definition movie experience and value on the market,” Moore said. “The reviews, the word of mouth and the consumer response have all been crystal clear †HD DVD is the format of choice. We’re not forcing movie technology on game players but are instead letting them choose how to personalize their experiences. If they want HD DVD, there’s no better value out there.”

The drive will come bundled with the Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote and should be available mid November in North America, UK, France and Germany, retailing at $199/â¬199.99/£129.99 – other territories will follow in 2007. For a limited time the drive will also come bundled with Universal Pictures’ blockbuster film Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” on HD DVD.
