In a meeting at the Microsoft headquarters, Bill Gates discussed the imminent battle between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Gates feels that the earlier launch of the Xbox 360 will be a great advantage.
“Our view is basically: We’ve got a Ferrari. They’ve got a Ferrari,” Gates said. “Our Ferrari is leaving the starting line substantially before their Ferrari is, and, in most races, that’s a very nice thing.“
The Xbox 360 is set to launch in the US, Europe and Japan in time for the year end holiday season, some time ahead of the PlayStation 3’s slated spring launch. Gates said that “we tried it the other way last time,” referring to the fact that the PlayStation 2 launched well ahead of the Xbox and as a result had a significant advantage over the Xbox.
Microsoft senior vice president Robbie Bach, said that the hardware specs of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are nip and tuck, with neither console having a distinct advantage.
“They’re going to be a little faster in a few areas; we’re going to be a little faster in a few areas. The net result from a hardware perspective is going to be kind of a toss-up.“
Bach was keen to point out that he expects developer support for the Xbox 360 to be much greater than with the Xbox, with the Xbox 360 development tools being their “secret sauce.” He also said that 160 games are in development with around 40 games expected by the end of the year and approximately 15 titles available at launch.
