Edge Online reports on new UK sales data from GfK Chart-Track which has revealed a huge lead for the Wii over its rivals.
The data comes from GAME Group financial presentation materials and reveals the current UK installed hardware base of the current platforms (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, DS and PSP) stands at 17.3 million, a figure which has risen from 8.8 million units last September.
Broken down it’s the Wii which rules the roost, its 3.6 million units comparing very favourably to the Xbox 360’s 2.3 million units and the PS3’s 1.4 million units. In the year since September 2007 2.5 million Wiis have been sold, 0.9 million Xbox 360s have been sold and 1 million PS3s have been sold.
Handheld hardware was also dominated by Nintendo; the DS installed base rose from 3.8 million units to 7.1 million units over the same 12-month period, while the PSP rose from 2.2 million units to 2.9 million.
GAME also forecasts continued Nintendo dominance over the coming months. The total hardware installed base is expected to reach 21 million units by Christmas, with the Wii and DS forecast to sell a further 1.3 and 1.2 million units respectively. GAME also expects the PS3 and Xbox 360 to sell half a million apiece, while the PSP is expected to shift 200,000 units.
