The Xbox 360 has remained on top in the US, with August sales totalling 308,000 units. The sales victory for Microsoft’s ageing console is despite price cuts in August to the 3DS and PlayStation 3.

Nintendo’s troubled 3D handheld did benefit from its new cheaper price, with 235,000 units sold, while the PlayStation 3 came in third place with 218,000 units sold. Sony has pointed towards strong sales in the second half of August but overall the PS3 is still some way off the pace being set by the Xbox 360.

The Wii and Nintendo DS took fourth and fifth place respectively.
