The article cited a statement from a Microsoft spokeswoman, who confirmed the reports that the new console, codenamed “Xenon” would miss this year’s GDC.

These reports are surprising, given the fact that the original console was revealed at the conference way back in 2000. Microsoft was expected to follow suit with it’s new machine, especially when the console was barely mentioned at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, which is where it was originally rumoured Bill Gates would lift the lid on his new gaming behemoth.

Sony and Nintendo are also expected to show their new consoles, codenamed “PS3” and “Revolution” respectively, at the E3 conference in Los Angeles, which could make May a very exciting month in gaming indeed. Particularly intriguing is what form Nintendo’s new console will take, as they have said that the machine will mark a “paradigm shift” in the way people think about gaming. What this means is vastly open to interpretation, but we wait with bated breath to see what plans the Japanese giant has to pull itself out of its current run of poor hardware sales.
