World of Warcraft has adopted a free-to-play model by allowing users subscription-free access to the game up to level 20.

According to PC Gamer, trial accounts will make the first 20 levels of the game available for free and will not put a limit on the number of characters a user can create.

New players can then purchase the game and the Burning Crusade expansion for just $20.

Additionally, existing subscribers who don’t currently own the Burning Crusade expansion will find the add-on has been added to their account at no cost.

A full FAQ on the new trial account system is available on the Blizzard website.

Initially WoW offered a 10-day trial which offered an extremely limited version of the game for non-subscription paying users. Technically speaking 20 free levels is relatively on a par with 10 free days in-game so it’s not a drastic change from what Blizzard was doing to begin with.
