Gamasutra reports that Blizzard’s World of Warcraft has sold 8.6 million copies to date in the US, according to data provided by the NPD Group.
The blockbuster MMO launched in November 2004 and has since gone on to spawn expansions, The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. The 8.6 million figure includes sales of the original game, both expansions, Collector’s Editions and the Battle Chest (game and expansions bundled).
Gamasutra estimates that World of Warcraft has therefore earned sales totalling as much as $258 million from US retail alone.
Blizzard’s most recent subscriber count for the MMO was a massive 11.5 million.
