World of Warcraft’s adoption of free-to-play elements brings validation to the F2P market, according to Gamersfirst’s Joseph Willmon.

Recently Blizzard introduced an extended free trial which gives users the ability to play the first 20 levels of their character for free.

“Well, while I cannot speak for Blizzard or their future plans, I can say that their change from a time-gated trial to a level-gated trial is a step towards the Free2Play model,” Willmon told VideoGamer.com.

“That, and the introduction of vanity items and mounts in their Battle.Net store a few years back shows that Blizzard knows there is a market in the Free2Play space that they’d like a piece of.

“If anything, to have the 800-pound gorilla of MMO’s starting to slowly adopt things you were doing near a decade ago certainly brings a type of validation to the market.”

Recently Blizzard president Michael Morhaime stated that despite the falling subscription numbers in World of Warcraft, the firm believes the new trial system, as well as expansion into international areas such as China and Brazil, will help change the tide.
