World of Warcraft was released in the autumn of 2004 and has gone on to set regular milestones. With its success seemingly never ending, Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the MMO which has broken into modern popular culture now has an astonishing eight million subscribers.
Of these eight million, 3.5 million subscribers come from China. North American players total 2 million, Europe 1.5 million, and the rest are found scattered elsewhere around the planet.
“We’re ecstatic that the World of Warcraft community has continued to grow steadily since we launched the game,” said Blizzard president and cofounder Mike Morhaime. “This milestone wouldn’t have been possible for us to achieve without the incredible support of our players.“
The world of World of Warcraft is soon to be expanded with the long awaited release of The Burning Crusade expansion. After a prolonged beta period the game will finally be available to all WoW gamers on Tuesday, January 16. Some fancy launch events are taking place too, if you’re mad keen on WoW and want to meet some of the developers.
