As Blizzard had predicted, players returned to World of Warcraft in their droves to experience new expansion Warlord of Draenor, which launched on November 13.

Despite a problematic launch – which saw long queue times for players – more than 3.3 million copies of the expansion were sold to consumers in just 24 hours. All this helped the game’s subscriber figure rocket to over 10 million players.

“We’re thrilled that so many players jumped in to play Warlords of Draenor on day one and are having a great time with the new content,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We poured a lot of hard work and passion into this expansion, and we appreciate all the kind words from players and the overwhelming support they continue to show for World of Warcraft.”

Back in June WoW’s subscriber figure was 6.8 million, which rose to 7.4 million as of September 30. It appears the expansion is just what players needed to rejuvenate interest in the MMO, which at its peak had over 12 million paying subscribers.
