World of Warcraft Classic is a great return to the Golden Age of WoW, especially as modern WoW receives its most broken updates in history. However, as players relive their best years over and over again, it can get a little tiring, although Blizzard is working on new content for the classic MMO.
In the past few weeks, WoW Classic fans and streamers have started migrating to another classic MMO, Jagex’s Old School RuneScape. Jumping from Hardcore WoW to Hardcore Ironman OSRS, WoW veterans are having a brilliant time on Jagex’s also-ageing MMO.
As players jump ship for a quick vacay before their inevitable return trip to WoW, developer Jagex has taken notice of the influx of new players. With Twitch viewer counts higher than ever, the developer is hoping that the new wave of players will help to continue improving the game.
Speaking in response to a video of WoW streamer Guzu playing OSRS’ Hardcore Ironman for the first time, Jagex developer Mod Gengis commented on the way of newcomers to the game.
“[I] would love to hear the highlights,” Gengis said (thanks,GR). “[We’re] always looking to compare notes on how we can improve FTUE.”
“Also so psyched we’re getting these guys trying out Old School,” they continued. “[It’s a] huge honor and I truly hope them and the audience enjoy the ride!”
WoW players are finding the switch to OSRS refreshing, especially as builds don’t get absolutely shafted from patch to patch. One WoW fan explained: “I find it so fresh that I can play a character that will not be irrelevant one year later.”
Old School RuneScape may not have the same exact feel as World of Warcraft Classic, but both games are fantastic MMORPGs. There’s always been some degree of overlap between the two fanbases, but it’s always amazing to see players try out other games for the first time.
Alongside WoW Classic, Blizzard also has more content in the works for the normal WoW game with more expansions in the works. Right now, the MMO is experiencing its new Collector’s Bounty event, although the rare loot drops aren’t as exciting as they should be.
