The World of Warcraft Classic seasonal update servers Season of Discovery has been regularly updated for over a year and a half. Unfortunately, for fans that enjoy the fresh take on OG WoW, Blizzard will no longer be designing future content as it aims to “cook” new ideas for the MMO.
Since 2023, Seasons of Discovery servers have proved to be a very popular form of World of Warcraft Classic. However, the team is now refocusing to create brand-new content “set against the backdrop of original World of Warcraft”.
World of Warcraft Classic scraps Season of Discovery
Explained in a recent blog post, WoW Classic Game Producer Aggrend explained that the team never expected Season of Discovery to be as popular as it proved to be. After releasing one final update – the Scarlet Enclave – the team has decided to refocus its efforts on creating more original experiences for Classic WoW.
“Season of Discovery was a success beyond our wildest imagination back in 2023. We learned so much, we grew as a team both literally and figuratively, and we’ve been invigorated for the future like never before,” the producer explained.
Aggrend revealed that the team is already working on its “next major project in the original WoW design space” which will bring brand-new experiences to the retro-MMO. However, the team can’t support both this new project and Season of Discovery simultaneously.
“We have big plans and big ambitions for this type of ‘found photographs’ content set in the original world of Azeroth,” they explained. “But in order to realize those ambitions, we need to make sure we’re spending our time where it will make the most impact on the long-term future of WoW Classic. We want to set ourselves up for success by taking the time we need to get in the proverbial kitchen and ‘cook’, iterate on, and shape our ideas and lessons learned from Season of Discovery into something truly exciting. Season of Discovery was always meant to be an ephemeral seasonal experience, and while it became so much more for a time, we’re extremely excited about the things we’re working on for the future.”
While Season of Discovery will not be receiving any major updates, the servers will still be kept online for players who wish to experience that content. The team explained that they “hope to see the game mode continue to operate similar to WoW Classic Era for many months (if not years) to come” while they work on new experiences for the MMO.
