A new World of Tanks spin-off game has been announced by developer Wargaming, World of Tanks: Heat. Announced alongside the massive 2.0 update for the original game, this new spin-off takes the beloved vehicular combat of the mainline series and adapts it into a faster hero shooter format.

Set in an alternte post-WW2 era, World of Tanks: Heat places players into fast-paced 10v10 battles where tanks move faster and have access to dynamic abilities that can quickly change up the battlefield.

Revealed during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live ceremony, Wargaming’s latest WoT spin-off gives players access to a “roster of experimental vehicles – each with unique abilities, deep customisation and powers to dominate the battle”.

Due to its alternate universe setting, World of Tanks: Heat takes WW2-like tanks and retrofits them with unique weapons not possible in the base game. Combined with the game’s “hero-enhanced abilities”, players will be given access to a completely different type of gameplay.

Each hero has their own abilities that can be combined with different tanks for countless options.

Wargaming describes Heat as a new “free-to-win” game with the game’s monetisation focusing on “cosmetics, battle passes, and time-savers”. Similar to Wargaming’s unfortunately failed Steel Hunters, players won’t be able to buy their way to victory.

Powered by a new proprietary game engine, World of Tanks: Heat aims to be better looking than all prior games in the series with “immersive environments and dynamic cinematic effects” not possible in its predecessors.

“World of Tanks: HEAT is our bold vision for the franchise, delivering an entirely new tank experience with a fresh setting, new gameplay mechanics, faster pace, and cutting-edge tech,” said Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming. “Inheriting the renowned World of Tanks DNA, the game lets players enjoy tank warfare like never before, battling in ways we once only could imagine.”

When World of Tanks: Heat does eventually release, the new game will be Wargaming’s “first ever simultaneous full cross-platform release with cross-progression”. When the game releases, players will be able to join the fight on PC, Steam Deck, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. There’s no word on a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game.
