World in Conflict is to be very much based in the real-word, with all the equipment and artillery you would expect to find, yet the game will still retain a fictitious edge. The game is set in an alternative history where the Soviet Union still exists and war between the superpowers is ongoing. The single-player campaign will follow a young American soldier throughout the war effort, and Massive says it has made a big effort to make the single-player mode more than just a string of skirmishes.
“World in Conflict will take strategy games in a new, exciting direction, narrowing the gameplay focus on the best part – the intense action of modern warfare – and challenges gamers to work together to defeat the most powerful armies the world has ever seen,” said Cindy Cook, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer for VU Games. “Massive Entertainment’s critically acclaimed Ground Control series represented landmark advances in 3D technology. World in Conflict will continue that legacy and bring the strategy genre to the next generation.“
We can also expect a selection of multiplayer modes, with support for up to 16 players, and a host of authentic Soviet, American and NATO weaponry, which can do real damage to the destructible environments in the game.
“With World in Conflict, our focus has been to create the maximum number of tactical choices, climactic battles and other game-shifting events that occur during each scenario or multiplayer match,” said Massive founder and CEO Martin Walfisz. “We’ve done this through a focus on the one thing people love most about strategy gaming – the combat.“
World in Conflict is scheduled for a spring 2007 release on the PC and is to be published by Vivendi Universal Games. For more information on the game check out GameSpot’s World in Conflict Q&A.
