Reuters reports that filmmaker John Woo is to direct and produce “Ninja Gold”, a new property from veteran video game creator Warren Spector. Fox Atomic will release the film, with Spector – of Deus Ex fame – exec producing.

Ninja Gold will see the traditional ninja brought into the modern era and is based on facts that the Yakuza and Russian mob are heavily involved in stealing tons of gold in South Africa.

The idea actually started with John Woo. He wanted to do something involving traditional ninjas in a modern-day setting, and the idea just resonated with me. I was intrigued with the idea of what happens when the traditional and the contemporary come into conflict,” said Spector.

Spector continued: “This was an attempt to create a concept that would work in, and be developed for, a variety of media simultaneously. That’s something new for games – and for movies.

The film will be more reality-based than the game and is hoped to go into production next year. There’s currently no information on when the game will be released and no publisher has been announced.

Woo is no stranger to video games, having created Tiger Hill Games in 2003. The studio’s first title, Stranglehold, is scheduled for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC later this year.
