When Nintendo announced that the browser was not to be included as standard, but instead made available from the Wii Shop Channel, it caused a bit of an outcry – people have come to expect not to have to pay for a web browser.

Opera has now announced that Nintendo intends to offer the Opera browser free of charge as a temporary promotion for Wii users until June 2007. After this point users can purchase Opera using Wii points (the price has not been announced).

At the moment it’s not clear if the browser will remain free to those who downloaded it during the promotion, once the promotion finishes. A Nintendo rep told Pro-G:

I’m afraid we don’t have any information to confirm either way at the moment. Nintendo will be making more announcements about the Opera browser closer to launch.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted.
