A GameCube controller adapter is to be released for Wii U in time for the launch of Super Smash Bros., Nintendo has announced.

The adapter connects to the Wii U’s two front-facing USB ports, and offers four GameCube controller ports, which presumably also support the wireless WaveBird pads.

News of the adapter broke in a promo video for the Smash Bros. Invitational, but was later confirmed by Nintendo’s American and European Twitter accounts.

“It’s official: The #WiiU version of #SmashBros. will be playable with GameCube controllers!” Tweeted Nintendo Europe.

No release date has been announced, but the adapter will be present in the tournament which is just weeks away.

Smash Bros. is set to launch for Wii U this Christmas.
