According to sales data published by the NPD Group, the top selling game of 2008 wasn’t Gears of War 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4 or Call of Duty: World at War, but Nintendo’s Wii Play.

The mini-game collection which is bundled with a Wii Remote (or should that be the other way round?) sold a staggering 5.28 million units in the US over the course of 2008. Nintendo titles also managed to claim places two to four with Mario Kart Wii (5 million units), Wii Fit (4.53 million units) and Super Smash Bros Brawl (4.17 million units). Nintendo’s Mario Kart DS also squeezed into the Top 10, selling 1.65 million units.

Elsewhere in the Top 10, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV sold 3.29 million units on Xbox 360 and 1.89 million units on PS3, Call of Duty: World at War sold 2.75 million units on Xbox 360, Gears of War 2 has managed 2.31 million units and Madden NFL 09 shifted 1.87 million units, also on Xbox 360.
