Shigeru Miyamoto has announced a new Pikmin game as the first in-house title for the Wii U.

The revelation was made at the very end of a Nintendo roundtable discussion, held at E3 earlier today.

“I really did want to release Pikmin this year in celebration of that 10th Anniversary,” said Miyamoto. “And earlier there was a question, ‘Are you working on any other Wii games?’

“Pikmin, as I promised last year, is a Wii game we’ve been working on. But as we’ve been working on the Wii U hardware, and I’ve been looking at those beautiful HD graphics and that fancy new controller, I’ve been getting more and more the feeling that we’d really like to see Pikmin up here on that hardware. And I guess it’s the perfect system for Pikmin.

“So we’re going to make it on that,” he concluded, finally cementing a somewhat drawn out – but nonetheless welcome – announcement.

Miyamoto added that the game’s release itself may not be that far off, either.

“Because we had been working on Pikmin for Wii for a while, maybe it won’t be too long before it’s ready for Wii U.”

Up until this point in the discussion, Miyamoto had repeatedly stated that he wouldn’t answer questions about Pikmin or the Wii U.

“There are two sides to me here today,” he admitted. “One is the corporate side that is wanting to follow the precedent we set for E3 in not announcing any official titles for the system. But then there’s the other side of me, that really wants to tell you that we’re working on Pikmin.”
