According to data released by ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack, Nintendo has claimed the top four positions in the best-selling games of 2009 so far.

Wii Fit is the best-seller, followed by Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii and Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Sony’s Killzone 2 is the first core game in the chart at No.5. Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 places at No.6, Brain Training is at No.7, The Sims 3 (despite its recent release) is at No.8, Call of Duty: World at War is a No.9 and Mario & Sonic and the Olympic Games is at No.10.

“These figures are clear evidence that gaming is now mainstream in the UK,” stated ELSPA director general Michael Rawlinson.

“The demographic has changed, so it’s time we did away with the misperception that video games are merely the preserve of teenage boys shooting zombies. Innovation in the industry means the social and educational benefits of gaming are now enjoyed by players of both sexes and of all ages.”

Update: The original list published by ELSPA was based on individual formats. ELSPA has now also released a Top 10 list based on all formats sales.
