If you don’t already know, the Wii does not feature DVD playback capabilities. Nintendo has been adamant that with DVD players now found in almost every home, there is no need for the Wii to offer the functionality.
However, it has now been announced that Sonic Solutions will be powering DVD playback for a “future version” of the Wii in the latter half of 2007. Nintendo has chosen to use the Sonic CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator to enable DVD playback, but at this time it’s not clear what is meant by a “future version of the Wii.
It could be that the new version of the Wii is simply a Wii console bundled with the DVD playback software, and it would make sense for Nintendo to offer the functionality to purchase on the Wii Store for those who already own a Wii.
For the time being Nintendo has not made a formal announcement regarding its plans for DVD playback on the Wii.
