Wii and DS dominate in North America

The Nintendo DS shifted more than half a million units during March, around three times that of the PSP which managed only 180,000 units. The Wii also continued its success, selling 259,000 units, only beaten in sales by the DS (508,000) and PlayStation 2 (280,000).

Elsewhere it is the Xbox 360 which continues to outsell the PlayStation 3. Microsoft’s console managing sales of 199,000 compared to only 130,000 for the PlayStation 3.

During the first quarter of 2007 the Wii has sold over a million units, with the Nintendo DS just shy of 1.25 million.

The message delivered by both Wii and Nintendo DS is the same one,” says Reggie Fils-Aime, president, Nintendo of America. “Innovation is compelling both current gamers and new gamers to experience a new way to play. Nintendo is bringing gaming back to the masses.

Nintendo expects shipments of the Wii to increase in April, although with demand still high it may still be difficult to find a unit at retail.

Sony has responded to the NPD figures, noting that the PlayStation 3 and PSP were the only consoles which saw an increase in sales over the February numbers – both up by 2%. Wii is down 22% and Xbox 360 saw a 12% drop.
