DC Universe Online is making the move to a free-to-play business model in order to open up the game to a bigger fan base, according to executive producer Lorin Jameson.

He also explained in an interview with Eurogamer, that the shift to free-to-play is a reaction to player-feedback asking for different ways to play the MMO, rather than a response to the lower-than-expected subscription numbers to the game.

“The subscription model is relatively new on the PS3 and we’ve already had success with our other free-to-play titles, like Clone War Adventures and Free Realms, so we thought this was a good time to introduce some alternate models to allow as many people as possible to play the game.”

He said in response to the low number of subscribers: “I think we’ve been doing really quite well. We sold a lot of copies, we’ve had a lot of people paying and playing the game. This was just a way to open up to even more folks.”

Players will be able to download and access DC Universe Online for free on PlayStation 3 and PC next month.
